Sweeney’s Opticians are celebrating over 70 years in business in Sligo town. Opened in 1944 by the Sweeney family, the newly refurbished practice is now under the management of Optometrist Martha Ward, F.A.O.I.
Sweeney’s Opticians has always been held in high esteem and it is our intention to uphold and consolidate the high professional standards in Sligo town. Sweeney’s Opticians ethos has always been about vision care and personal quality service.
Our up to date state of the art equipment allows us to carry out a full eye health check with a much greater degree of efficiency and reliability. Today the eye examination is more about eye health. Many eye diseases can be detected at the back of the eye with the use of this technology.
A native of Rosses Point, Martha Ward is delighted to be home and working as Resident Optometrist and Proprietor of Sweeney’s Opticians. Having attended Secondary School in the Ursuline College Sligo, Martha completed her 4 year degree in Optometry and in 2007 graduated with an honours degree from DIT. Martha is also a fellow of the Association of Optometrists Ireland. For the next 7 years Ward worked in Dublin and Belfast, both in busy High street stores and smaller, more personal independent practices. This mix gave her invaluable experience across all areas of Optometry. Today, she has a keen interest in Children’s Eye Health as well as further specialties in Glaucoma and Diabetes. For the past year she have been working with the National Diabetic Screening programme, this has allowed her to enhance the eye care service provided at Sweeney’s Opticians.
